Productivity & Engagement - Carlos Venegas

Front-Line Leadership Development with SimplifyWork

Train managers to increase productivity and encourage engagement at the same time.

With SimplifyWork, organizations can see immediate improvement

Developed by Carlos Venegas, SimplifyWork is a practical training where front-line managers learn a simple way to guide their teams to:

  1. improve processes immediately,
  2. make changes to the work they do, and
  3. work together better.

The design of SimplifyWork provides the opportunity for managers and their teams to yield tangible, measurable results right out of the gate, and then continue to improve processes as required. Managers and team members can independently reuse the tools they learn without hiring a consultant each time.

This training is designed for the manager who doesn’t have time for useless bureaucracy and needless jargon.

Managers learn how to involve their teams in improving almost any work process.

Hear More from Carlos about SimplifyWork

“Simplify Work is simple and to the point, and I designed it this way for three reasons:

First, I saw too many Lean implementations struggle or even fail under the weight of complicated, traditional Lean implementations. There are hundreds of tools used in Lean and Six Sigma. How many do you think you need to improve a process? Actually, in most cases you only need one. (Now I know there are many other important principles and tools, and I use them myself. I’ll share those with you in later courses. But the point is it’s way better to start simple and get immediate results. It’s motivational.)

Second, I realized that there are motivated managers who want to make things better, but their organization is not doing Lean, or Lean was tried but didn’t take root. Right now they are on their own, and I believe they deserve the tools and encouragement to achieve their goals.

Third, this training is about learning how to do something valuable, and I want you to get those skills fast, and be able to apply them at your earliest convenience.”

You will learn the fundamentals. Nothing fancy or over-complicated. You can apply them to any process, from a purchasing process, an HR process, an engineering process to how you make coffee or do laundry. And once you apply these fundamentals, you can build on them, whether you run a 3-person yard maintenance company or a 15,000 person government agency.

Seattle Public Utilities: the SimplifyWork Leadership Development Program

The Seattle Public Utilities participated in SimplifyWork. Managers learned in a supportive, small-cohort setting. Then they shared and practiced the concepts with their team on a real process they wanted to improve. Managers brought their results and challenges back to the cohort so they could learn from and support each other.

The cohort sessions were online live and guided by a qualified trainer. Between cohort sessions, managers used an online training platform to access training material, including videos and downloadable tools.

By the end of the training the teams had a new process to implement. Immediate success reinforced their confidence in SimplifyWork and their ability to improve other processes, maintaining momentum in their improvement efforts.

The Seattle Public Utilities managers reported time savings and increases in value added work. Some of their results are shown in the table below.

Process Annual Results • time saved •
Review and interpret system reports +412 hours
Emergency Street Use Permitting +37 hours
Inspecting New Warehouse Inventory +10 hours
Contract Intake & Assignment Process +110 hours
Monthly meetings went from 3% to 75% value added tasks

Here are some comments from the managers in the cohort:

I liked the smaller group setting – it felt like a safe space to share and learn from each other across the Utility.

The online training platform was easily accessible and easy to understand the progression of steps.

I found some of the tools helpful to guide discussion.  We often jump to solutions.  This process ‘forced’ discussion and analysis of current state and recognition of waste.

I really enjoyed the cohort final report – really cool to see the story arc for each process and how it evolved.  Definitely a great chance to learn from others’ successes and failures.

Encourages us to finish, when other trainings did not.

We are going to move forward regardless of whether this training is officially adopted. The idea of SimplifyWork is all about working smarter not harder, which is what we are trying to focus on as a division.

It wasn’t some kind of radical training where we had a huge epiphany. We liked that it wasn’t super technical or full of lots of jargon…this was more approachable for all the different learning styles we had in our group.
